Restrictions imposed near Brengi Stream Sinkhole

Srinagar, Feb 16: Authorities in Kashmir valley have imposed restrictions on the movement of public and media persons at the sinkhole created in Brengi Stream at village Wandevalgam of Kokernag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district as the natural water source poses a threat to life and property.

The ertical sinkhole, experts believe is a natural phenomenon developed due to the gradual dissolution of limestone rocks in the river, it is attracting large numbers of people to the site and has even caused concerns for the population of the area.

“Despite restrictions being imposed by the sub-divisional magistrate Kokernag on any assembly of general public or movement of individuals near the sinkhole, several media personnel continue to move close to the site, posing threat to their own lives”, reads an order issued from the office of the Tehsildar Kokernag on Wednesday.

The administration has advised people including all media personnel not to violate the restrictions imposed around the sinkhole and warned that action under relevant sections of law will be taken against anyone found violating the order, it said.

A whirlpool has formed in the Brengi stream and the entire water discharges into this hole. This is the second such instance in the recent past in the area that has disrupted the water flow posing threat to flora and fauna downstream.

The stream was diverted earlier, however, another sinkhole was naturally caused and all water is flowing into it.

Sources said that about 15 to 20 kilometres of the stream has gone dry and thousands of fish have died in it.

The villagers living around the Brengi stream fear that if authorities do not take immediate measures, it would cause drought to a vast area of agricultural land.

However, the sinkhole had an outlet at Achabal which presently is discharging normally.

A team of Flood Control, Irrigation department, Geology, and Mining, Public Health Engineering (PHEE) department are monitoring the situation and are yet to find the outlet of this sinkhole.
