Director Extension SKUAST-K Visits KVK Kupwara, Inaugurates Walnut Nursery and Promotes Natural Farming

Kupwara,Mar,25:Professor Raihana Habib Kanth, Director Extension of SKUAST-K, paid her first official visit to Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kupwara today after assuming charge of the Directorate of Extension. During her visit, she reviewed various scientific and natural farming activities undertaken by KVK Kupwara.

A key highlight of the visit was the inauguration of a walnut nursery by Prof. Kanth, where she also planted a walnut sapling, symbolizing the commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices in the region.

In a significant step toward promoting natural farming and empowering rural women, Prof. Kanth participated in the concluding session of the 5-day Central Sponsored Training Program on Natural Farming under the initiative Empowering Krishi Sakhi. This program aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of women farmers, enabling them to become ambassadors of sustainable agricultural practices. A total of 35 Krishi Sakhis actively took part in the training.

The training program featured a series of informative lectures delivered by KVK scientists and an officer from the Agriculture Department. These sessions covered key aspects of natural farming, emphasizing its role in improving soil fertility, reducing dependence on chemical inputs, and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability. A special interactive session was also held, allowing Krishi Sakhis to share their experiences and challenges with experts.

Speaking on the occasion, Director Extension SKUAST-K Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth highlighted the importance of natural farming in addressing global challenges such as climate change and water scarcity. She emphasized the vital role of Krishi Sakhis in advocating and implementing sustainable agricultural practices at the grassroots level. She also connected natural farming with traditional agricultural wisdom, stressing the need to return to eco-friendly cultivation methods that ensure food security and environmental conservation.

The initiative at KVK Kupwara aligns with the broader vision of sustainable agriculture, equipping women farmers with the necessary skills to practice and promote natural farming techniques in their communities. By reducing chemical usage, improving soil health, and conserving water resources, such programs contribute significantly to the resilience of the agricultural sector.

Prof. Kaiser Mohi-ud-Din Malik, Head of KVK Kupwara, along with his scientific team, expressed gratitude to Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth for her prompt visit and support. She was welcomed with  bouquets and traditional shawl as a mark of appreciation. Prof. Kanth assured full support from the Directorate of Extension, SKUAST-K, for the welfare of farmers in Kupwara district.

The visit and training program at KVK Kupwara reaffirm SKUAST-K’s commitment to empowering farmers, particularly women, and fostering sustainable farming practices for a better future.
