Srinagar 19 December: Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and a senior leader of the National Conference, has confirmed his recent discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to the media, Abdullah emphasized the urgency of reinstating statehood, which has been a significant demand since the revocation of the region’s special status in August 2019.
Abdullah reportedly stressed the need for a clear roadmap and timeline for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. He highlighted that such a step is essential for addressing public aspirations and ensuring meaningful governance.
Abdullah also pointed out the importance of empowering elected representatives and involving them in decision-making processes to combat issues like terrorism and militancy effectively.
The restoration of statehood has been a contentious issue, with political parties across Jammu and Kashmir demanding its implementation. The Supreme Court of India, in a December 2023 ruling, had directed the Union Government to restore statehood and conduct assembly elections.
