MLA Haveli and MLA Surankote inaugurates Scientific Beekeeping seminar at Poonch

Poonch  Feb 03:- A two-day seminar-cum-training programme on scientific beekeeping commenced today in Poonch, organized by the Department of Agriculture Poonch to promote modern apiculture techniques and financial assistance schemes available to farmers. The programme was formally inaugurated by Hon’ble MLA Haveli Ajaz Ahmed Jan and Hon’ble MLA Surankote Ch. Mohd Akram underscored the role of beekeeping in enhancing farm productivity and rural livelihoods.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Chief Agriculture Officer Poonch highlighted beekeeping as a viable agri-allied venture, particularly in the context of government schemes such as the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and the Madhu Kranti Portal, which facilitates beekeeper registration and subsidy disbursement. Farmers were informed about financial incentives, including an 80% subsidy on beekeeping units, aimed at promoting the sector in the region. He also briefed participants on the immense potential of beekeeping in the district and shed light on the medicinal value of honey, the role of pollination in enhancing foodgrain production, and employment generation in the apiculture sector.

The first day of the seminar witnessed the participation of over 200 individuals, including college students, farmers, and beekeepers, demonstrating a strong interest in apiculture. Expert speakers from the Agriculture and allied departments conducted technical sessions covering scientific hive management, disease control, pollination benefits and honey extraction techniques.

MLA Haveli Ajaz Ahmed Jan appreciated the efforts of the Chief Agriculture Officer Poonch for his tireless work in boosting mushroom production in the district. He highlighted that Poonch has transitioned from being a mushroom importer to a self-sufficient producer, significantly strengthening the local economy. He also assured farmers that there is no shortage of funds, and they should fully avail themselves of the financial incentives and support available.

MLA Surankote Ch. Mohd Akram commended the Agriculture Department for its initiatives and emphasized that 90% of the district's economy depends on agriculture. He acknowledged the immense efforts made by the department to promote agricultural activities, ensuring sustainable growth and increased farmer income.

The event concluded with an interactive session where progressive beekeepers and farmers shared their experiences, discussed challenges, and explored opportunities for scaling up honey production. Tomorrow, the programme will continue with hands-on practical training on colony management, honey harvesting, and scientific disease prevention techniques, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for all participants.
