Srinagar, Mar 6: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra on Monday urged the government to reinstate July 13 and December 5 as public holidays, highlighting their significance in Jammu and Kashmir’s political and democratic history.
Speaking to reporters in Jammu, Parra emphasized the need to recognize those who played a crucial role in shaping the region’s democratic framework. “Jammu and Kashmir has finally seen an elected government after years, with an encouraging voter turnout. While we discuss financial policies and development agendas, it is equally important to remember those who laid the foundation of democracy—whether it was Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah or the martyrs of July 13 who stood against autocratic rule,” he remarked.
His statement comes amidst ongoing political debates regarding the region’s historical milestones and their recognition in contemporary governance.
Calling for a bipartisan approach, Parra urged all political parties to support the resolution for reinstating these holidays. “This should go beyond party politics. These days are not just about a particular community or region; they symbolize the democratic aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir,” he asserted.
Reacting to opposition from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Parra accused the party of viewing the issue through a narrow ideological lens. “BJP continues to communalize history. For them, this is about religion and Kashmir. But in reality, it’s about honoring democracy and the sacrifices made for it,” he said.
Former Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti backed Parra’s remarks, applauding his speech in a post on X. “Congratulations @parawahid for eloquently expressing the pain and anguish of the people of J&K—peaceful yet peace less,” she wrote. [KNT]
