Handwara,Mar,13: Hundreds of residents, including men and women, from Woskura village of Handwara took to the streets today, staging a protest against the installation of smart electricity meters. The protestors blocked the Vilgam-Handwara road near Talri Bridge, raising concerns over the Power Development Department’s (PDD) decision to introduce smart meters while ignoring pressing civic issues.
The agitated residents argued that they have been struggling with inadequate road infrastructure and an acute drinking water crisis. They insisted that the government should prioritize resolving these fundamental issues before moving forward with the smart meter installation.
"We have been suffering due to poor roads and a severe drinking water shortage. Instead of addressing these pressing problems, the administration is imposing smart meters on us," one of the protestors expressed.
The road blockade disrupted traffic movement, causing inconvenience to commuters. The protesters urged authorities to take immediate action to meet their demands, warning of intensified demonstrations if their concerns were not addressed.
In response, the Sub-District Administration of Handwara, along with SDPO Handwara and SHO Handwara, engaged with the demonstrators. The officials assured the residents that their grievances regarding basic amenities, such as road repairs and drinking water supply, would be addressed promptly.
Following the intervention of Handwara Police, the protesters called off their demonstration peacefully, expressing hope that the administration would fulfill its promises and take concrete steps toward improving their living conditions.
