Langate,Feb 28: Amid heavy snowfall of 4 to 5 inches in the Handwara sub-district, multiple villages in Langate—including Kharou, Guloora, Kultoora, Hanjishat, Phauropeth, Bungam, Haripora, Wahipora, Unisoo, Kachri, Yaroo, Gund Chogal, Udipora, Krabatlpora, Zand-Batpora, Babagund, Kanou, Ujroo, and Gund Kharou—have been without electricity for the past 48 hours. The prolonged power outage has thrown daily life into disarray, leaving residents struggling for essential needs.
With temperatures dropping, families, patients, and elderly individuals are bearing the brunt of the crisis. The outage has also impacted water supply in many homes and mosques, as several water schemes rely on electricity for operation.
Residents have voiced their anger over the fragile infrastructure of the Power Development Department (PDD). “Despite paying electricity bills ranging from ₹1,500 to ₹2,000 per month, we are left in darkness after every snowfall. The system is weak, and the administration is failing us,” a resident lamented.
PDD officials have stated that repair teams are working on the ground to restore power, but no definite timeline has been provided. However, the delays have fueled growing resentment among the locals, who are also questioning the role of their elected representatives.
“Our MLA Sheikh Khursheed, DDC Pharou Khursheed Ahmad Dar, and DDC Chairman Irfan Sultan Pandithpori made tall promises during elections, but now, when we need them, they are nowhere to be found,” another resident said.
With Ramadan set to begin in just 12 hours, the urgency to restore power has heightened, as uninterrupted electricity is crucial for water supply and other daily needs.
The affected residents are now urging the Lieutenant Governor’s administration and Deputy Commissioner Kupwara to intervene immediately and direct the PDD to restore electricity at the earliest.
