Srinagar, Feb 1 : A recent report on the potential link between cat-borne infections and miscarriages has sparked widespread discussion, raising concerns about the risks of zoonotic diseases.
The story, initially reported by the news agency JKNS, has drawn attention to the health implications of handling cats, particularly in relation to infections that may pose risks to pregnant women. As the report gained traction, it has fueled debates on public health awareness and preventive measures.
Many locals have expressed their concerns over the issue and said they have always been fond of cats, but after reading this report, I am worried about the potential health risks, especially for pregnant women.
Another local, Fayaz Ahmad, said nothing about the need for more awareness and said people need to be educated about the risks and necessary precautions. “Instead of panic, we should focus on responsible pet care and hygiene,” he said.
Earlier, Dr. Syed Altaf Geelani, Superintendent of Central Veterinary Hospital Srinagar, told toxoplasmosis may lead to miscarriage cases among females. He said cats pose various health risks due to their unhygienic toilet habits, as they defecate anywhere. “It is true that cats carry fungal infections, which are easily transmissible.
