Crackdown on Illegal Mining in Handwara: JCB, Two Dumpers Seized, ₹1 Lakh Fine Imposed

Langate, Jan,25: In a significant crackdown on illegal mining and transportation of minerals, a joint team of Handwara Police and the Geology and Mining Department seized two dumpers and one JCB machine in Langate area of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. The seized vehicles were found openly involved in unauthorized mineral extraction and transportation. A fine of ₹1 lakh was imposed on the spot. The action was taken under the direct supervision of DMO Kupwara and led by area incharge Bashir Ahmad. The team has been actively conducting operations over the past ten days in Langate, Kralgund, and Handwara areas to curb illegal mining activities.

 

According to the area head of the Geology and Mining Department, a special drive has been initiated to counter illicit extraction and transportation of minerals. "Yesterday, during a joint raid at Nallah Mawar around 1:00 PM, a JCB machine involved in illegal activities near the banks of the Nallah was seized. Today, sudden raids were conducted near Kharou Bridge, leading to the seizure of two dumpers involved in unauthorized mineral transportation," he said.

 

The seized vehicles have been handed over to Handwara Police, and legal action under the MMRD Act has been initiated. The Geology and Mining Department urged the public to follow the law and comply with the terms and conditions of permits, where applicable. Citizens have been warned against engaging in illicit mining activities that harm the local ecology, with assurances of strict action against violators in the future. This coordinated effort highlights the authorities' commitment to preserving the environment and maintaining legal compliance in mineral extraction and transportation.
