Srinagar, Feb 19 : Jammu and Kashmir is on the verge of reclaiming its place among India's top travel destinations, with both domestic and international tourists showing renewed interest in the region, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Wednesday.

Speaking at the South Asia Travel and Tourism Exchange (SATTE) at Yashobhumi, Abdullah emphasized J&K’s evolving tourism potential, moving beyond its well-known attractions like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and pilgrimage sites such as Mata Vaishno Devi and Amarnath.

"We are not just about scenic landscapes and religious tourism. From adventure sports to wellness retreats, J&K offers something for everyone," he said, inviting travelers to explore the region’s hidden gems.

Abdullah highlighted how improved connectivity is making Jammu and Kashmir more accessible. With direct rail links between Kashmir and the rest of the country expected to become operational soon, the region is set to witness a significant boost in footfall.

"Years ago, visiting Kashmir meant relying on limited flights from Delhi. Now, with direct flights from multiple cities and an upcoming railway connection, the journey is easier than ever," he added.

Border tourism is also gaining momentum, with places like Gurez, Tangdhar, Machil, Karnah, and Keran seeing an influx of visitors. Additionally, lesser-known destinations such as Bangus and Doodhpathri are emerging as major attractions.

The chief minister stressed that Jammu and Kashmir is more than a seasonal getaway. "Whether it's summer retreats, winter skiing, pilgrimages, or adventure sports, we offer a year-round experience," he said.

Dismissing any notion that Jammu and Kashmir is stuck in the past, Abdullah asserted that the region is actively investing in its tourism sector.

“J&K is not just resting on nostalgia. We are ready for new investments, conferences, and tourism opportunities," he said. "This is the time to visit, to experience, and to invest in the future of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Ending his address with an open invitation, Abdullah assured visitors of a memorable experience. "Give us a chance to host you, and we promise you will leave with lifelong memories."

Later, in a post on X, the chief minister praised Delhi Metro’s Airport Express Line, saying, “25 minutes in the train beats 1.5 hours in the car hands down & saves fuel & emissions. I’m not driving to Yashobhumi again.” [KNT]
