Picnic Turns Fatal: Two GDC Sogam Students Dead in Handwara Bus Mishap

 

Kupwara, Apr,12: The tragic road accident in Vodhpora, Handwara involving a bus carrying students from Government Degree College (GDC) Sogam has claimed a second life, as another injured student succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, taking the death toll to two.

 

The bus, which was on its way to a picnic, overturned early in the day, resulting in the death of two students and injuries to 22 others. The accident has sent shockwaves across the region, prompting immediate administrative and political response.

 

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a post on X, he wrote, “The loss of two young promising students from GDC Sogam, in the tragic accident near Handwara is a tragedy that weighs heavily on all of us. My deepest condolences to their families in this hour of grief. Prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.”

 

He further assured that the administration is monitoring the situation closely and has instructed the concerned departments to ensure all necessary medical and logistical support.

 

Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, visited GMC Handwara where most of the injured students are being treated. She interacted with the patients and hospital staff, reiterating the administration’s commitment to extend all possible assistance to the victims and their families.

 

"The district administration is ensuring the best possible care. A case will be registered and police investigations will follow,” the DC said.

 

Medical Superintendent GMC Handwara, Dr. Aijaz, informed that the condition of most students is stable. Two critically injured students have been referred to Srinagar for advanced treatment, while others are being kept under observation and are responding well to treatment.

 

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident, while local residents and public representatives have called for better safety measures on student excursions.
