Tragedy in Handwara: Two GDC Sogam Students Die in Picnic Bus Accident

Kupwara, April 12:A day meant for joy and celebration ended in heartbreak as two students from Government Degree College (GDC) Sogam lost their lives and 22 others sustained injuries after their picnic bus overturned in Vodhpora area of Handwara on Saturday.
The accident occurred early in the morning when the bus, carrying students on an educational picnic, lost control and overturned under circumstances that are now under investigation. One student died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries later in the hospital.
The tragic incident has triggered shock and mourning across the Valley, prompting a swift response from the administration and top political leadership.
J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed profound grief over the loss. In a message posted on X, he said, “The loss of two young, promising students from GDC Sogam is a tragedy that weighs heavily on all of us. My deepest condolences to their families. Prayers for the recovery of the injured.”
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, visited GMC Handwara where the injured are undergoing treatment. “The administration is ensuring the best possible care. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway,” she stated.
MS Handwara, Dr. Aijaz, informed that while most students are stable, two critically injured have been referred to Srinagar for advanced care.
Political leaders, including People’s Conference Chairman and MLA Handwara Sajad Gani Lone, Minister Javid Ahmad Dar, and Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, visited the hospital to take stock of the medical response. Wani, moved by the incident, said, “The children who lost their lives were my neighbors. The injured are like my own.”
The Chief Minister has approved ex-gratia relief of Rs 1 lakh each for the families of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for the severely injured, and Rs 25,000 for those with minor injuries.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the exact cause of the accident, including whether it resulted from mechanical failure, negligence, or road conditions.
The tragedy has sparked renewed calls from civil society and parents for enhanced safety protocols on school and college excursions to prevent such incidents in the future.
As Kupwara mourns, the focus now turns to ensuring the best care for the injured and accountability for the devastating mishap.
